The American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar and the National Park Service announce the unveiling of the new Civil War Gateway Visitor?s Center at Historic Tredegar. The new Center will serve as the official launching point for visitors to the Richmond Region in their journey to learn more about the Civil War, its causes, its legacies, and how it still impacts the nation today. The newly opened Center is located on the 8.3-acre Historic Tredegar and will be accessible to visitors from 9:00am to 5:00pm seven days a week.
?The 150th anniversaries of the Civil War and Emancipation mark an important milestone in the history of our region. The American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar is uniquely positioned to help the region accurately relate the historic role that Richmond ? and Tredegar ? played a century and a half ago,? said Christy Coleman, President of The American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar.
As the official Civil War Gateway Visitor?s Center, the new facility will not only orient visitors to Historic Tredegar and the Region?s 13 Civil War battlefields, but it will also provide information to visitors about the numerous Civil War historical sites and attractions such as the Virginia Historical Society, the Museum & White House of the Confederacy, Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia, and others. It will also provide information on visiting other historical sites beyond Central Virginia. National Park Service Rangers and Center staff will be available to provide guidance and insight to tourists and visitors alike.
?The National Park Service has enjoyed a strong partnership with Historic Tredegar for more than 10 years,? said David Ruth, superintendent of the Richmond National Battlefield Park, National Park Service. ?We have worked closely with The American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar to provide a unique and meaningful experience for all of our visitors through the creation of this new Center.?
As part of the effort to attract visitors to the Richmond area, the Richmond Metropolitan Convention & Visitor?s Bureau (RMCVB) has provided the new Center with interactive, touch-screen kiosks which allow visitors to learn more about the historical sites around the Richmond region. The new kiosks are part of the ongoing promotional and marketing campaign, ?On To Richmond,? which the RMCVB launched last year as way of attracting more tourism to the Richmond region.
?The Civil War Gateway Visitor?s Center rounds out the Richmond Region?s Civil War and Emancipation offerings,? said RMCVB President and CEO Jack Berry. ?The Gateway and OnToRichmond.com combine to provide visitors and potential visitors with helpful tools to utilize while planning their travels. During these years of heightened interest in the Civil War and Emancipation, Richmond will be ground zero for history-minded travelers, and these comprehensive resources will go far in enhancing the visitor experience. ?
The Civil War Gateway Visitor?s Center was made possible through the generosity of Dominion Resources, MeadWestvaco, the National Park Service, and Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Gottwald.
